Frankfurt. Since 18th of March our friend and colleague is held. He waits for a judgment, but its coming is unknow. He has 3 visits per month in addition to 60 minutes of phone calls, and has not received any letters. He spends his time reading and writing, to repel oppressive boredom and monotony. Here’s one of his writings, which we receive and publish. Without filters, as it was composed in cell [Skip to italian version]

11.30. The warder is looking at me. Stop, finished.
We are closed. On the table the lunch is waiting for me: “pasta with sauce”.
sad. In perfect harmony with the jail.
The sauce: freeze-dried packages,
fake taste. In perfect harmony with the jail.
Us – even more freeze-dried,
alienated from freedom.
Everyone’s soul awaiting judgement.
We await that some superior soul
pick a card from ours,
the deck of cards:
Pleasantly we dream, think, imagine freedom.
Every day the same conversations:
“come on you’ll get out !”
“ah, I dunno. I am full of fear.”
harmless weapons fighting boredom.
The Demon of every prisoner,
heavy penance weighing on the shoulders of each.
That guy, the other guy, and that other guy as well.
They are unarmed.
But boredom doesn’t do them in,
doesn’t stab them in the heart,
it’s not the hit man.
Like a cancer, it grows slowly
And takes over everything:
The walls are always the same:
The prisons are always the same:
These are the only things
That remind us of the outside,
that remind us that that outside has been taken from us.
Outside of here our love,
the virgin mary,
Everything is outside.
But all that is nothing inside here
nothing that is everything, everything that is nothing.
We will regain freedom,
a mother who begets endless joy.
She who is honestly glorified only when she disappears.
only when we can’t see her, touch her, call her.
Because freedom is like air:
when we have it, we don’t realize it,
it is when we are deprived of it that we can no longer breathe.
